You Can Raise Chickens

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

It’s nice to have your own chickens and it’s not surprising that so many people are doing just that , in their own backyard.

Those chickens will keep you supplied with fresh eggs each day, and possibly even enough to sell on to local shops, or at the local market.

I think eggs must be one of my favourite foods. They are just so tasty ” and so versatile. There are so many ways an egg can be cooked ” boiled, fried, poached to name just a few. And that’s not even mentioning all their uses in baking cakes, quiches etc.

I live in the city and I am a regular consumer of eggs. I get mine in the local grocery store or supermarket. They are OK I guess, but have you ever tasted real free-range eggs?

I go to my moms in the country every month or so for a weekend. She always has a supply of eggs that she buys from a local farmer ” they are the real deal, free-range, home on the range type.

Building a Chicken Coop – A Great Way to Save Money

Monday, June 15th, 2009

If you’re just starting to keep chickens or you’re enlarging your flock, a great way to save money is to try building a chicken coop yourself. Although there are some good ready-made coops available they are expensive, and building a chicken coop is not hard ” especially if youve got a good set of plans and instructions to follow.

Its a great family project too. Depending on the ages of your children, they will be able to help building the chicken coop by doing something: fetching and organising the materials, telling you what to do next, assembling some of the pieces or even building the entire chicken coop.

The first thing to decide is what kind of chicken coop is right for you. If you only have, or are planning to get, a few hens, say around three, then a chicken ark could be a good solution.

If you want your chickens to free range, you can let them out, but a chicken ark is designed to be moved around so the chickens get to range as you move it. The simple design includes a roosting area one end and run the other.

Caring For Your Pregnant Rabbit

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Book Focus: “The Rabbit Handbook” by David Taylor has a great chapter on breeding rabbits, including caring for a pregnant rabbit, mating rabbits and caring for the babies (called “kits”.) We certainly recommend it as a more thorough resource if the following article doesn’t answer all of your questions.

Is your rabbit pregnant? Sometimes it can be hard to tell if a female rabbit is pregnant or not. Even veterinarians may have a hard time discerning if a rabbit is pregnant. One thing you may notice is that the female will not like any advances from the male, therefore you know she is pregnant. You may also be able to feel the kits (young rabbits) in her stomach, which will feel like little marbles. Once you determine that your rabbit is pregnant, there are a few tips you should know about caring for the mother and her litter once they are born.

Firstly, we will look at how to care for the mother during pregnancy. The gestation period for rabbits is only thirty one days. When her time has nearly come (after twenty eight days) your rabbit will prepare a nest of hay and fur so she can give birth. She may leave this till only one day before having her litter.

Having Fun with Hummingbirds in Your Backyard.

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Numerous things can be done to attract hummingbirds to your garden. Some easy adjustments can be made to make your garden hummingbird friendly, so that you are rewarded with the presence of feeding and nesting hummingbirds alongwith their young ones.

Setting up hummingbird feeders is a great way to attract them. The feeders should be filled with artificial sugar water solution made at home. Some red flowers can be hanged on a basket or planted near the feeders. This will make it easier for the birds to find the feeders, as they will be attracted to the red flowers. It should be remembered that these birds only rely on sites to find their food source as they do not have any sense of smell.

When using your own hummingbird nectar for the feeders you must never add artificial red coloring to them. The red colors of the feeders are enough to attract them. Also, use of honey or artificial sweeteners has to be avoided. Artificial sweeteners do not have any food value and honey ferments easily which can cause sores in the mouth of the birds. The hummingbird feeders in your garden have to be cleaned every 3-4 days and the nectar changed to keep on attracting the birds.

Monday, May 25th, 2009

There are a variety of pet urns for ashes available online. You will find many types of materials incorporated in the construction of a pet urn. Many pet urns will be made of stone, metal, wood or ceramic.

Often metal urns will be a simple vase or possibly a figuring. Wood pet urns are often made of hardwoods and are simply a box these are great for cremation. Ceramic urns can come in a variety of shapes such as vases and even animal shapes.

If your are placing an urn outdoors metal will be one of your best choices and many metals will tarnish or discolor over time. Many will bury the urn or plant a tree over or near it. Some people prefer to use the pet urn and part of a pet memorial and yard ornament.

When burying an urn you may consider wood. Wood urns are often placed on a mantle as part of a memorial along with other mementos. If you move frequently this may be a good alternative.
